Terpstra Carpentry will be involved in every aspect of the construction process, from site preparation and laying the foundation, to framing, roofing, flooring and exterior finishings. Terpstra Carpentry does not provide architectural or design services, however, we will work closely with you and your architect and provide recommendations and advice on your design decisions. At the initial consultation, we will provide you with input and guidance on your chosen property lot, blueprints and the ease and feasibility of your build. One of the advantages of working with a custom homebuilder is the flexibility and versatility that it allows the client. Your home will be completely unique and customized to you and your family. Since 1973 Terpstra Carpentry has been a respected homebuilder in Prince Edward County, and we have close and long-standing relationships with construction material suppliers and local subcontractors throughout the region.

We understand that life is busy and you may not have the time to be closely involved in your build, which is why we offer our clients turnkey packages. In the turnkey package, once you have decided upon your lot and finalized your home design plans, then all you are required to do is sit back, relax and watch your home come to life. In our turnkey service, once you have signed the contract we will manage and coordinate the entire build, communicating and working with your chosen subcontractors to complete your build on time and within budget.

There are many variables involved in building a custom home. The length of your build will depend on numerous factors, including the size and complexity of the build. In general, custom homes take longer to build than predesigned or prefabricated homes. However, a custom built home provides you with the freedom and luxury of designing a home that is perfectly suited to your lifestyle and reflects your taste and personality.

After the initial consultation, once we have reviewed your design plans and the scope of your project, we will provide you with an estimated timeline for your build. At Terpstra Carpentry we like to give each and every construction project our utmost attention and care. For this reason, we generally do not undertake more than two projects at any given time. This allows Roy Terpstra to be on site every day to ensure that your construction project is being completed with the utmost care and craftsmanship, and is progressing in a timely manner.

To help expedite the home building process it is important to plan your build thoroughly and be well organized prior to the initial consultation. The design and planning stage is an important aspect of the home building process, and can help the rest of your build transpire quickly and efficiently. Having all of your interior and exterior selections completed prior to the onset of construction will save time and enhance productivity further down the road.

There will always be extenuating factors that can possibly effect the length of your build. These factors may include the size of your home, the complexity of your finishings, weather conditions, construction supply delays and last minute design changes. However, you can be assured that at Terpstra Carpentry we will do everything within our power to stay within our projected timeline, and have you in your new home as soon as possible without comprising on quality or craftsmanship.

The majority of your responsibilities should be complete by the time your build commences. Your responsibilities will include:

1. Locating and purchasing land in Prince Edward County: There are many beautiful lots for sale throughout Prince Edward County. If you haven’t yet purchased a lot, we recommend that you contact a local real estate agent who will be able to show you what is available in the County and advise you on how much you can expect to pay for vacant land. Prior to purchasing a specific lot, it is a good idea to check with the local township to ensure that the proper zoning is in place and that there are no building restrictions on the land.
2. Working with an architect to design your custom home: While Terpstra Carpentry does not provide design services, we will work closely with you and your architect to provide guidance and advice on your future custom home. Once your home design plans are complete, Terpstra Carpentry will provide you with an accurate project proposal and quotation. If you have not yet found an architect, we would be happy to provide you with the names of reputable architects within Prince Edward County. 3. Review the proposal and quotation provided by Terpstra Carpentry: After the initial consultation, Terpstra Carpentry will provide you with a proposal and quotation for your custom home build. We encourage you to read our proposal thoroughly and feel free to ask any questions that you may have. The proposal will also include a projected schedule for the build and a payment schedule.
4. Apply for a building permit: Terpstra Carpentry will be more than happy to assist you with obtaining a building permit. Building permits need to be obtained prior to the onset of construction and application should be submitted to the building inspector at your local township.
5. Payment: A payment schedule will be outlined in the proposal and quotation. We will require a deposit prior to commencing construction, and payments will be required as the build progresses.
6. Communication: Throughout the home building process we encourage you to be in contact with Terpstra Carpentry and to visit your new home as it comes to life. Open communication and superior customer service are our top priorities, and we will keep you updated on the progress of your new home.

Yes, you are more than welcome to visit your home during the construction process. It is an exciting progression watching a home come to life, and we encourage you to be a part of it. Throughout the home building process, we are happy to answer any questions that you may have regarding your build and welcome open communication from our clients. If you would like to visit your new home during working hours we encourage you to contact us beforehand. At times a construction site can be a dangerous place and we want to ensure your safety while you are visiting your new home. Roy and his crew make every effort to keep the construction site as clean, organized and safe as possible. However, we still recommend that you come to the construction site properly attired, which includes proper footwear (no sandals) and a hard hat if necessary.
